Sustainability and ESG in the C-Suite May/June 2022

As facility managers, we manage some of the largest assets and budgets of companies. Those budgets and assets are reviewed and prioritized by the executive leadership of the company based on its goals and mission. Environmental sustainability and Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) are becoming a more prevalent topic in the c-suite. Inflation is causing challenges for companies and causing teams to rethink their sustainability impact. They need to refocus their vision on resiliency and sustainability, leverage digital technology, and deliver price-sensitive sustainable products. A recent Gartner CEO and Senior Business Executive Survey assessed business leaders’ priorities and technology-related thinking. The survey covers commercial, revenue-pursuing organizations, but not the government.

The results of the 2022 CEO and Senior Business Executive Survey reveal that sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) has emerged as an enduring change (see Figure 1)

How does this evolving shift to sustainability and ESG impact our facilities and operations? What can we do to get ahead of the change and provide reasonable solutions to leadership? These are the questions we need to discuss as we move into budget season. When looking ahead one year or five we need to understand the organization’s priorities and how to use budget dollars to meet or exceed the sustainability and ESG goals.
